Weekend Reads

Articles:

Keep Reading With Your Children, Parents Urged {BBC}

Do you read with your kids even after they can read independently?  The experts say you should.

“It’s a real shame that parents don’t realise that just 10 minutes of reading with their child each day is one of the best ways they can support their education”, said Mr Clements.  “Reading together six days a week means an extra hour of support for a child…It’s definitely cheaper than an hour with a tutor and it could make a much bigger difference.”

Six Scaffolding Strategies to Use with Your Students {EduTopia}

Here’s a quick list of scaffolding techniques that work in almost any age setting.  Not familiar with scaffolding?  Check out my post here.

9 Things You Do Not Need to Be Happy {Marc and Angel Hack Life}

“The happiest people do not live with a certain set of circumstances, but rather with a certain set of attitudes.”

Activities:

DIY Action Figure Story {No Time For Flash Cards}

My boys often dictate stories aloud as they play with their Legos.  Why not encourage them to snap a few pictures and turn it all into a book?  Great for kinetic learners who may have a hard time pulling a story out of thin air.  Now that’s one awesome language and literacy activity! (pictured above)

Monster Mobiles {Happy Hooligans}

Another fun and simple creative art activity for Halloween!  If you’re on a tighter schedule, pre-paint the tubes or cover them with paper or contact paper.  And set the kids loose to decorate.

10 Not-So-Frightful Spider Web Crafts and Activities for Kids {Hands On As We Grow}

From science, to art, to fine motor skills, a spider web theme can cover it all.  Check out these 10 ideas curated by Jamie at Hands On As We Grow! (pictured above)

For those of you with a funny bone….

A while back I mentioned the hilarity of Kid History.  Well the team now has a series of 2 minute shorts, where kids are given a topic and ad lib a little narration, which is then acted out (and lip-synced) by adults.  Anyone who spends much time with kids will appreciate the way these little ones interpret the world.  If you need a good laugh, you’ve found the right place!  Here are some of my current favorites:

“Math Class”

“Bank”

“Proposal”

“Presidential Debate”

…Oh, how easily you can lose an hour, 3 hilarious minutes at a time…..

And last but not least…

I know I usually ask if you’re following ME on Facebook and Pinterest, but today I want to introduce you to someone else!  My friend Zina at Let’s Lasso the Moon shares fantastic insight on how to make the everyday more memorable.  Like her on Facebook here, and see what she’s been up to!  (PS – she happens to be a top-pinner at Pinterest, so all you Pinterest fans can find her here….that is if you aren’t one of the 1million+ who follow her already!)

Enjoy your weekend!

I’m Amanda Morgan. Here’s what I’m about…

In early education, there is too much distance between what we know and what we do. I bridge the gaps that exist between academia, decision-makers, educators, and parents so that together, we can improve the quality of early education while also respecting and protecting the childhood experience.
