Books Plus Gifts for Young Scientists!

December 12, 2019 by notjustcute Filed Under: Building Readers, Celebrate!, Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Over the years, I’ve been sharing some of my favorite books along with the perfect gifts to go with them.  It really is one of my favorite recipes for gifts for children: 1 great book + 1 fun toy = sure-fire winner with loads of use!

On top of that, this list includes links to Amazon, which is another favorite ingredient: not running around to stores.  Especially this time of year, the more I can order without ever getting into a car (or a parking lot) the better!

(If you do choose to use these Amazon affiliate links, a small percentage of any purchase at Amazon during that visit goes towards keeping this site running —  with no extra cost to you.  Thank You!)

This year, I’m paring the list down and focusing on gifts to encourage young scientists!  Inspired by my conversation with Asia Citro, I wanted to share some the amazing books she’s putting out with her publishing company, as well as a few other great books + gifts for keeping kids excited about science!  (As another perk, for every 10 books sold, Innovation Press donates one to programs, schools, and libraries serving low-income neighborhoods.)

Find something here for your favorite young scientists and/or for your classroom shelves!

Zoey & Sassafras + “Thinking Goggles”

Combine this endearing and engaging book series plus a pair of “thinking goggles” so that your scientist can puzzle things together just like Zoey!  (Or get the goggles in sets of four for class sets. What a fun way to get everyone ready to think like a scientist!)  This series is a beginning chapter book, so it’s perfect for independent readers or as a read-aloud for younger readers.  *Also, be sure to check out the newest addition, Zoey & Sassafras #7!

The Girl with a Mind for Math + Math Game

My math-loving son read this title and exclaimed, “Hey, she’s just like me!”  That’s one thing I love about this inclusive book series!  Pair this great read with a math game like this (recommended for ages 6+, and just might be finding its way into my second-grader’s stocking) or like this for younger ones.  *Also great with Asia’s book, Pigeon Math, a hilarious and ingenious counting book!

Evelyn the Adventurous Entymologist + Outdoor Explorer Kit

I’ll confess.  This book is perfect for young scientists, paired with an outdoor explorer kit like this, but the fact that Evelyn continued pursuing her passion well into her golden years, makes it an inspiring read for grown-ups like me.  Pass it along to your favorite dream chaser of any age!

The Astronaut with a Song for the Stars + LEGO City Space Research Shuttle

This is the inspiring story of Dr. Ellen Ochoa’s trip to space — and everything she had to overcome to get there.  Gift this book plus this LEGO City Space Research Shuttle to your favorite outer space enthusiast.

The Curious Kid’s Science Book + Science Lab Kit

This is the #1 science book every school and home should have!  Full of child-directed, adult-supported REAL SCIENCE, this book pairs well with a basic science kit like this and a willingness to jump in and experience all the successes and hard-won failures the science journey has to offer!

For more on keeping that science spark alive, be sure to listen to my interview with scientist, teacher, author, and publisher, Asia Citro.

In early education, there is too much distance between what we know and what we do. I bridge the gaps that exist between academia, decision-makers, educators, and parents so that together, we can improve the quality of early education while also respecting and protecting the childhood experience.
