Once again, I loved having a chat with Heather Shumaker about her fantastic book, It’s OK Not to Share and Other Renegade Rules for Raising Competent and Compassionate Kids (*affiliate). As we wrap up the year’s read along, Heather talks about how to get started with the Renegade Rules, how to stay sane when you’re parenting in public, and shares some exciting news about her next book. (I can’t wait for it!)
If you’re new to the read along, check out the past posts starting here or here.
(Sorry about the lag in video on my end. You can thank the Pineapple Express for stealing my daylight. Fortunately — for so many reasons — Heather does most of the talking!)
You can also view the video here.
Did you enjoy the read along? Did it change your parenting habits or your parenting perspectives? I’d love to hear what stood out most for you!

I haven’t actually followed your read-along but I read the articles with interest. One day I just bought the book and I have gained many new ideas from it. What I liked best was helping children express what they want. Someone hurt them? Go there with your child and let your child verbalize what has happened: “You hit me. That hurt. Don’t do that again. Be gentle with me.” We started that with our kids and they both communicate much better now. They still come to us from time to time and I nudge them to talk to their sibling directly.
There are also other parts that I found valuable but this one has so far been the most successful.
Thank you for talking about this book in such detail. It is so helpful and interesting.
