January 17, 2012 by notjustcute Filed Under: Learning through Play and Experience 14 Comments

The Secret to Potty Training…..

January 10, 2012 by notjustcute Filed Under: Learning through Play and Experience, Positive Guidance and Social Skills, Uncategorized 24 Comments

Whenever I start to feel guilty about the fact that I spent the majority of my Christmas vacation wearing my pajamas, I remind myself that I did in fact accomplish something very monumental, right there in my worn-out flannel bottoms and time-softened jersey shirt.  Well, rather, I should say my son accomplished something very monumental.  We cleared the first hurdle of potty-training.

{Repost} Play vs Academics: A False Dichotomy

November 8, 2011 by notjustcute Filed Under: Child Development & DAP, Learning through Play and Experience 14 Comments

A friend recently commented on this post (originally written in January of this year).  Because so many of you have joined me since then, I thought this might be a good time to share it again.

An argument is brewing in the preschool scene. In one corner, you have those arguing for more academics to give children that head start that might correct the troubles of high-school drop-outs and low test scores. Want to Give Your Kids an Advantage? Build Executive Functions

November 2, 2011 by notjustcute Filed Under: Child Development & DAP, Learning through Play and Experience, Uncategorized 18 Comments

Every parent wants their kids to have the best shot at succeeding at whatever their chosen path may be.  So we try to give them all of the right opportunities.  Some go to tutors, buy complicated programs, or drill through flashcards, but one of the best predictors of success is one that can be regularly built through play.

Potable Potions

Homemade root beer is always a sign of a special occasion at our house, but there’s just something about fall and Halloween that makes this brew especially exciting.  The magic (and the science) is in the dry ice.  It’s available at most grocery stores, but you usually have to ask for it at the check out stand or at guest services.  Made of frozen carbon dioxide, this solid changes directly to the gas phase, without a liquid stage between (a process called sublimation).  In addition to the cool fog effect, the dry ice actually carbonates your drink as it dissipates!

(Be sure to use tongs or gloves when handling dry ice as it is actually so cold that it burns the skin on contact.  Obviously, this also means you must give adequate supervision for children as you use this substance.)

I’m Amanda Morgan. Here’s what I’m about…

In early education, there is too much distance between what we know and what we do. I bridge the gaps that exist between academia, decision-makers, educators, and parents so that together, we can improve the quality of early education while also respecting and protecting the childhood experience.
