Child Behavior: Is it really about what they’re doing?

I have this internal alarm that goes off whenever I haven’t seen or heard my toddler for 60 seconds.  The realization usually startles me and I wonder off thinking, “Oh great.  What is he doing?”  Usually I find him emptying the soil from the potted plants, scrubbing the toothbrush drawer with a (wet) toilet brush, or exploring the markers (which are thankfully washable) at the art table….and on every adjoining wall.  It’s a tough job to keep up with kids, and all the things they DO.

McKenna's Mission

Remember my brilliant niece?  She’s now hitting the university grind as a future engineer.  For one of her classes she was asked to create a mission statement as a learner.  What she came up with inspired me, and I hope it does the same for you: [Read more…]

6 Board Books for Toddlers that Build Critical Reading Skills for the Future

board books

It’s never too early to start reading with your little ones!  Even the simple act of holding a baby on your lap as you turn pages and ad-lib conversation about the pages will lay a foundation for reading.  There are the obvious benefits of simply knowing how books work, the print concepts like how to hold it, turn pages, and that those marks our fingers dance over at the bottom are actually the words coming out of our mouths.

How Can We Make Our Schools Better?

Improve our schoolsI was in a discussion recently with a friend of mine who is also a public school administrator.  As we bantered back and forth about what could be done to improve schools — increased teacher pay, which would rely on increased accountability for teachers to be high quality, a determination which shouldn’t rely on standardized tests especially for young children, and round and round and round — it quickly became clear that a simple request like “improve our schools” can be a tangled, and very opinion-filled process.

That shouldn’t be a surprising realization, since education reform or school improvement seems to be a perennial hot topic.  But what struck me in the conversation was when my friend, in obvious frustration said something like, “It’s hard to figure it all out.”

Isn’t it Time to Create?

September 19, 2013 by notjustcute Filed Under: Create, Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Tips for getting creative with kids.

Faige Kobre’s guest post here about the therapeutic nature of art was a reminder to me to be more intentional about pulling out art supplies to provide an invitation for my boys to create.  I’m not sure what’s been holding me back, but it certainly wasn’t their interest!

Behavior or Communication?

September 17, 2013 by notjustcute Filed Under: Positive Guidance and Social Skills, Uncategorized 9 Comments

behavior is communication

I frequently have people ask me about their children’s behavior.  It often follows the pattern, “My child does _______.  What should I do?”  Now I’m not criticizing them for asking questions this way, I’ve found myself asking questions the same way.

I’m Amanda Morgan. Here’s what I’m about…

In early education, there is too much distance between what we know and what we do. I bridge the gaps that exist between academia, decision-makers, educators, and parents so that together, we can improve the quality of early education while also respecting and protecting the childhood experience.
