Fall is certainly creeping in!  Celebrate the changing seasons with this music and movement activity using Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.  (I originally posted this back in December.)

The Writing in the Salt

My oldest son began kindergarten this year.  He is enjoying all of the “big-kid” perks of going to school like riding the bus and having recess.  But he’s also discovered that school also comes with responsibilities.  Not least of which is a list of skills to be practiced as homework, including several penmanship tasks like drawing shapes and writing letters, numbers, and his first and last name.  I don’t think my guy is the first child to react as though writing practice were akin to being kidnapped by terrorists, but there is at least one way I’ve found to get around this response. Make it fun and exciting! [Read more…]

Last week I linked to an article stating that Kindergarten has become the New First Grade.  This week I read about a study claiming Nearly One Million Children in the US are Potentially Misdiagnosed with ADHD and couldn’t help but wonder about the connection between the two.  Don’t be surprised to see a full post on this later!

Choose Confidence Instead of Complaining

September 17, 2010 by notjustcute Filed Under: Positive Guidance and Social Skills, Uncategorized Leave a Comment

I read a post at Steady Mom last week entitled, “Why We Are Addicted to Complaining and How to Stop It“.  It resonated with me, and I found myself thinking about it quite a bit through the weekend.  On my first read, I thought to myself, “Yeah, I know those people.”  And I’m sure you do too.  Those people who are downers to be around, constantly complaining and finding the worst in any otherwise ideal situation.  Isn’t it interesting how much easier it is to see flaws in other people?

Max's Words

It’s no secret: I love to discover a great new children’s book.  While Max’s Words by Katie Banks is not actually a “new” book (it was published in 2006), it is “new to me” and I’m so glad I found it!

Weekend Reads 9/11/10

September 11, 2010 by notjustcute Filed Under: Weekend Reads Leave a Comment

I LOVED the article Positive Verbal Environments in NAEYC’s journal, Young Children.  A great discussion on how the words we use with children influence our relationships with them, and their own social competency.

Putting a Stop to the Potty Talk

September 10, 2010 by notjustcute Filed Under: Positive Guidance and Social Skills, Uncategorized 9 Comments

I have three boys.  Two are between the ages of four and six —  prime specimen for the potty-talking stage.  The other is still just babbling but has already been coached by his older and wiser brothers as to the comedic value of words like “toot” and “poop”. [Read more…]

The Best Books are Ageless

September 8, 2010 by notjustcute Filed Under: Building Readers, Learning through Play and Experience 11 Comments

About seven years ago, as a first grade teacher, I attended a workshop featuring Dr. Jean Feldman.  There were many things she shared that influenced me as a teacher, but there was one thing she said that I have thought back on many times: [Read more…]

I’m Amanda Morgan. Here’s what I’m about…

In early education, there is too much distance between what we know and what we do. I bridge the gaps that exist between academia, decision-makers, educators, and parents so that together, we can improve the quality of early education while also respecting and protecting the childhood experience.
