High Quality Early Education: Dollars and Sense

August 7, 2010 by notjustcute Filed Under: Child Development & DAP, Learning through Play and Experience Leave a Comment

Let me start off by making one thing clear.  Young children deserve a high quality early education because it is our responsibility as adults to care for them and give them what they need.  It’s a matter of moral responsibility.  Children need quality experiences to be whole and healthy and to meet the outer limits of their grand potentials, both as children and as adults.  That said, there have been a series of interesting articles recently, coming from unlikely sources.  It’s not NAEYC or Zero to Three issuing these papers, it’s economists and business leaders.

I recently returned from a few days up in the mountains with my family.  Now, this was not necessarily one of those laid-back retreats of quiet solitude.  Picture Dan in Real Life…..then double or triple the family.

How to Improve Your Read-Alouds with Young Children

July 31, 2010 by notjustcute Filed Under: Building Readers, Learning through Play and Experience 2 Comments

It’s hard to disagree with the evidence that reading aloud to young children yields great benefits throughout life.  And that’s just the factors that are easily tested – language skills, reading readiness, comprehension, and so on.  Add to that the relationship building aspect that comes along with a positive shared experience.  I still remember snuggling up in my dad’s lap and listening to him read some of my favorite stories and the “funny page” in the Sunday paper.  It was a real treat to get that one-on-one time, not to mention getting to hear his hilariously animated voices as well.

Mapping Out Your Preschool Study Themes

Spare the Rod: What Spanking Teaches Children

July 24, 2010 by notjustcute Filed Under: Child Development & DAP, Positive Guidance and Social Skills, Uncategorized 30 Comments

I heard a comedian the other day, who really made a good point.  He said essentially this:  “My friends are always questioning my choice not to spank my kids.  They’ll often say, “Never?  You’ll never spank you kids?  There’s no situation where you think you might need to spank your kids?”  When I say I’ll never hit my wife, nobody says, “Never?  You’ll never hit your wife?  There’s no situation where you think you might need to hit your wife?”  This logic got a good laugh from the crowd, and I think it was spot-on.

I’m Amanda Morgan. Here’s what I’m about…

In early education, there is too much distance between what we know and what we do. I bridge the gaps that exist between academia, decision-makers, educators, and parents so that together, we can improve the quality of early education while also respecting and protecting the childhood experience.
