Mind in the Making: Q&A with Ellen Galinsky

May 11, 2012 by notjustcute Filed Under: Child Development & DAP, Learning through Play and Experience, Uncategorized 1 Comment

I hope you all enjoyed the Mind in the Making Read-Along series.  I’m so glad that I read it, and I’m quite confident I’ll be going back to it again and again.

I’m also thrilled that Ellen Galinsky has offered to answer some of the questions you had about the book, and offer more insight into how the book came about, and the hopes she has for its influence.

I remember literally throwing one book into the fire because it was such a guilt-trip book.  Who needs that? We want to be inspired, not blamed. We are (unfortunately) far too fast to blame ourselves without needing anyone else to do it.” [Read more…]

About a year ago I wrote a series of posts about creativity — why it matters for our kids, why it may be disappearing, and what we can do to get it back.  I decided to put the whole series into one downloadable Ebook that you can print or read right from your screen.

Think about Jean Piaget, Maria Montessori, and Nate Berkus.  How do these three fit in a group?  Each has taught the strong impact of a thoughtfully prepared environment.  Attractive and organized, of course, but it’s not just about aesthetics, it’s also about purpose.

Visiting the Greenhouse: A Field Trip, a Scavenger Hunt, and a Book

May 2, 2012 by notjustcute Filed Under: Building Readers, Get Outside, Learning through Play and Experience 10 Comments

While studying seeds, plants and flowers, I love to take a field trip to a beautiful garden.  Unfortunately, my plans to do so recently were vetoed by weather reports for a thunder storm.  So instead, we visited a beautiful greenhouse we’re lucky to have nearby.

Telling Teachers Thanks

April 30, 2012 by notjustcute Filed Under: Celebrate!, Uncategorized 9 Comments

Having been a teacher, I’ve had several friends ask for suggestions when it comes to giving gifts to teachers.  Whether it’s for Teacher Appreciation Week (May 7-11) or for the end of the year, many people wonder just how to say thanks for the hours teachers have put into inspiring their kids.

Lessons for Our Boys

April 26, 2012 by notjustcute Filed Under: Positive Guidance and Social Skills, Uncategorized 14 Comments

As a mother of three boys (with a fourth coming soon) I spend a lot of time thinking about boys in society and society’s messages to boys. There are a lot of mixed messages out there.  It’s caused me to spend some time thinking about what I want to make sure my boys — and all boys — are taught.

I’m Amanda Morgan. Here’s what I’m about…

In early education, there is too much distance between what we know and what we do. I bridge the gaps that exist between academia, decision-makers, educators, and parents so that together, we can improve the quality of early education while also respecting and protecting the childhood experience.
