Today I’m over at my friend Steph’s place, Modern Parents Messy Kids, sharing some fun and easy ways to create your own puppet show theaters. Here’s a taste:

Weekend Reads 7.9.11 and Paying it Forward
This month’s Pay it Forward feature comes from a place that’s really special to me, Costa Rica. There, Scott and Leslie Freeman and their family are engaged in creating a safe place for children who otherwise face overwhelming risks on their own.
Time Timer Video and Giveaway!
I had orginally planned on including the Time Timer in the First Friday Q&A, but it just didn’t seem to jive with the hot topic I ended up with for the Q&A feature, so I’m giving it a post of its own.
This is one of my favorite time management tools for kids. It’s a great way to help children grasp the concept of time. Check it out in this video:
Weekend Reads 7.2.11 and Subscription Updates
Happy 4th of July weekend! Even though it’s a holiday weekend, I do have some housekeeping to do, and that includes here on the site. As happy as it makes me to have so many of you reading via email, my host’s server isn’t quite as happy. For those who have been recieving emailed posts sent from my address (amanda@notjustcute.com), you will need to update your subscription before you can receive any more posts.
Guest Posts: Family Stories and Book Excerpts
I’m trading my usual Wednesday post for a Tuesday post to let you know about a couple of guest posts I have out there in the blogosphere right now.

Weekend Reads 6/25/11
While I had a great week away with my husband, I came back to find some wonderful reads to catch up on. Here are just a few of my favorites:
Serendipitous Seed Science
I’m sharing a few old favorites while I’m away this week. This one was originally posted way back in June of 2009.
It’s only June, and my preschool age son is already antsy for school. He asked me to “play preschool” with him yesterday. A convenient request, since I’m pretty good at playing preschool. He’s watched the show Sid the Science Kid on PBS (a great show for kids and teachers alike), and wanted to do a “Super Fab Lab” science activity like they do. He was in luck! I just happened to have such an activity on hand! It might be one you’d like to recreate as well!

The Sweet Science of Cool Treats
Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and with it comes my boys’ request for frozen treats. While you can certianly grab twin pops in your freezer section for a buck a bag, making your own cool summer treats can be a great opportunity for building basic science experiences with concepts like freezing , melting, and the broader concept of physical change. In addition to that, creating these fun treats together builds confidence, good memories, and even some physical skills. Oh, and they’re delicious! Here are four fun and tasty treats to make this summer: [Read more…]
